Background
Dominik Lungerich, born in Dortmund, Germany, commenced his academic journey by earning his Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Friedrich-Alexander-University (FAU) Erlangen-Nuernberg, Germany, in 2009. He furthered his studies at FAU and the University of Georgia, USA, from 2010 to 2011, focusing on the synthesis of annulenes under the guidance of Professors Paul v. Ragué Schleyer† and Professor Norbert Jux, culminating in a Master's degree in Synthetic and Supramolecular Chemistry in 2011.
In 2012, he pursued his doctoral studies at FAU, receiving his degree (Dr. rer. nat.) in Chemistry in 2017. His commitment to research took him to esteemed institutions worldwide, including a visiting researcher position in Prof. Harry L. Anderson’s group at Oxford University in 2014. He continued his academic endeavors as JSPS postdoctoral fellow with Professor Eiichi Nakamura at the University of Tokyo, Japan, from 2017 to 2019, followed by a return fellowship at his alma mater until 2020.
In 2020, his expertise was acknowledged with his appointment as a Principal Investigator at the Center for Nanomedicine, Institute for Basic Science (IBS), and as a Research Professor at the Advanced Science Institute, Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea.
Throughout his career, Dominik Lungerich received several awards and honors for his contributions to chemistry, including the Young Scientist Fellowship, the Alexander von Humboldt Feodor-Lynen Return Fellowship, and a postdoctoral fellowship from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). He graduated with honors (summa cum laude) and his doctoral work was distinguished with accolades such as the Zerweck Prize for the best doctoral thesis. As a student, he received a full scholarship from the University of Georgia and a travel stipend from the Ilse und Dr. Alexander Mayer Foundation to pursue his studies abroad.
