Celebrating Jongseongs first first-author paper

(Feb, 2024)

Celebrating Jongseong Park's first first-author paper published in PCCP over a tasty beer and chicken combo in Sinchon.

Together with Dr. Sol Lee and Orein Francis Jafter, Jongseong Park demonstrated by operando high-resolution electron microscopy studies, how electron beams interact on the molecular level with metalloporphyrins. The team could show that electron beams can be used to generate single metal atoms that actively diffuse on carbon support and generate metal nano clusters.

IBS Nanomedicine Research Nature Masterclasses.

(Dec, 2023)

Yonsei University's Institute for Advanced Study and the IBS Nanomedicine Research Group held Nature Masterclasses at the IBS building on November 30. The event, which started with self-introductions by nanomedicine researchers and NanoBME students,  was centered around Dr. Pep Pamies, editor-in-chief of the journal Nature Biomedical Engineering , and Dr. Claire Hansell, editor of the journal Nature .

This Masterclasses event was run in a way that students and researchers practiced the entire process of submitting a paper and listened to feedback from editors. Before the event, students also had time to directly edit the abstracts they had submitted in advance from two editors. Through this opportunity, students actively asked questions about publishing papers and developed their passion for writing excellent papers through interaction with editors.

The Institute of Advanced Sciences' IBS Nanomedical Research Group hosts the MPI

(Oct, 2023)

In frame, Dr. Dominik Lungerich is caught actively participating in the discussions, focusing on the theme of "Nanotechnology for Medical Research at Molecular Interfaces," as he anticipates delivering his presentation tomorrow, delving into the realms of in-situ TEM and cinematic nanoscience research.

The symposium was organized to commemorate the establishment of a collaborative research hub with the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research. This event also aimed to foster research synergy with Severance Hospital. Eminent scholars attended the symposium, including Joachim Spatz, Peer Fischer, Professor Kim Tae-kyun, and Professor Jang Won-seok.

Yonsei Africa Week

(Sep, 2023)

In a historical juncture, Yonsei University collaborates with the Yonsei African Student Association to usher in a week-long commemorative celebration. Chaired by Jafter Orein Francis, this observance is designed to honor and acknowledge the profound contributions of African scholars to the educational, research, and developmental facets of the institution. Notably, this initiative serves as the prelude to the formal launch of the "Yonsei Institute of African Studies." The program's inauguration is set to be graced by 11 Vice Chancellors from distinguished African universities and 12 African Ambassadors to the Republic of Korea.
We are proud of having Orein in our team!

Breaking Ground in Cinematic Chemistry: Harnessing Electron Beams for Carbon Nanostructure Evolution

(Jun, 2023)

In our latest publication, we unveil a pioneering approach to cinematic chemistry, showcasing the utilization of the electron beam's synthetic potential. Through an exhaustive exploration involving single-molecule, atomic-resolution, and time-resolved transmission electron microscopy studies, we trigger the creation of a remarkable doubly-holed fullerene-porphyrin cage structure. This intricate feat is achieved by deploying a meticulously defined benzoporphyrin precursor on a graphene substrate.

Our real-time imaging unveils the hybrid's remarkable capacity to host up to two Pb atoms, allowing us to delve into the dynamics of the Pb–Pb binding mechanism within this extraordinary metallo-organic cage structure. Our simulations reveal that the accumulation of secondary electrons in the irradiated area's periphery can serve as the initiators of chemical reactions.

This breakthrough holds profound implications for the design of advanced carbon nanostructures via electron-beam sculpting. The future of this field hinges on a comprehensive understanding of molecular radiation chemistry and its limitations.
